Driving into Accra, I passed the wall of one of the most expensive hotels in Ghana – 500.00 a night for basic. By the wall a woman was sleeping, and beside her, three children. The youngest was snuggled into her and she, even in sleep, had her hand on that child. Around her were all her possessions – and they were few.
This kind of contrast is everywhere in Ghana. Pastors roll up to their prosperity churches in big cars, smooth suits and preach a message of “Have all you want.” Yet within the very shadow of their ministry, people sleep on the pavement and wander with no hope into a very bleak future.
If those working here in Ghana cannot cope with this contrast, they cannot stay. How do I cope? I know I can do little to help, but at least I notice. I feel the sorrow and make it mine. Does this achieve anything? It achieves more than most, who pass by on the other side, but it seems so little. The missionary environment has never been and is not, even today an easy one in which to work.
I wrote a poem about what I saw. It’s the latest on my Instagram page “Just a Christian poet”. Just go to Instagram and put my page name in the search box, or click here to hear the poem.
We are both very busy. Mary was preaching in Beloved this Sunday, and I was preaching in the city. Good to report – we are both well.
On Tuesday 14th you can meet us on YouTube. It’s our regular “Good Morning Mission.” This week Mary is going to tell us about her 2 new projects, Deanne is going to share her testimony and Anita will give us a round up of her shop. Go to our site on YouTube – Serving Africa Mission and click on LIVE. We go live 5 minutes before the main broadcast.
Blessings
Jim
