Climbing out of the plane at Kotoka airport does feel very much like coming home. Once through immigration the white faces begin to thin out and as soon as we come out into the concourse they’re mostly gone. We are back with a black African friends whom we have known for so many years.
The road back to the base is as bumpy as ever but already our bodies are adjusting to a different temperature and our hearts feel again the joy of being here. Through the base gates and there are some of our friends to greet us. We climb the stairs to our small flat where all our familiar things are just where we left them. We see again the black African sky out of our window with the trees standing like sentinels waiting for the morning. We sleep among the sounds of the African night which we have been doing for over 30 years. Soon the new day will be here. Ghana – it feels very much like home.
