Hard times

Monday 6th May 2024

The Ghana currency – the cedi – has fallen against the pound and the dollar. Fortunately this depreciation is not as bad as has been seen in the past. That’s the economic summary from the economists. Here’s the reality. Last week, prices on the local transport virtually doubled. The drivers and the owners have seen what is happening and have acted accordingly.

It hurts the people in our valley who are on very small and fixed incomes. Many are paid by the day for their labour. Now they have to pay twice as much to get to their place of work. Economics on the ground really hurts the ordinary people. I’m sure governments do their best but Ghana is a tiny fish in a very big and dangerous ocean. Hard times.
