Ghana today – Jim’s view

Instant reflections of life in Ghana today
Thursday 16th May 2024

“The Ghana Health Service (GHS) commenced its 10th National COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign on Sunday, May 2024. The exercise, which is mainly targeting individuals who have not gone for the COVID-19 vaccination, will end on Thursday, May 9, 2024. A statement issued by the GHS on Sunday said, “Teams will be moving to communities and visiting homes to get eligible people vaccinated.” As of December 31, 2023, a total of 28,515,854 people in Ghana had been vaccinated against COVID-19, according to GHS statistics.”

28.5 million people in Ghana out of 35 million have been vaccinated. Those of us who live there might raise an eyebrow at the figures, but what we do know is that Ghana has been very proactive in vaccination, which is to its credit. The problem has always been convincing people that such a vaccination is worthwhile. Opposition from the non-vaxxers has faded away. The idea that COVID is a western disease and so vaccination is not needed has been more difficult to overcome.

Fortunately the elderly population have taken the lead, turning up in great numbers at the vaccination centres. Ghana values its elders and will have seen this example. The figures may be a little inaccurate but in my experience, having lived in Ghana through the pandemic, the Ghana health authority and the government have done a really good job. From 2 western missionaries who received their first and booster vaccinations in Accra, and from millions of Ghanaians – thankyou very much and well done!
