Instant reflections of life in Ghana today
Thursday 25th July 2024
The daily graphic this week-
“President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for US support to deal with the increasing activities of jihadists’ insurgency in the Sahel. He said their activities were spreading to the coast with the intention to destabilise the entire region, adding that the phenomenon was “the biggest security challenge confronting virtually all West African states”. “Our nightmare is the situation where insurgents in the Sahel link up with pirates in the Gulf of Guinea to destabilise the entire region,” the President said.”
My response to this statement by the president is ”Yes” and “No.” Yes, the threat from the Sahal is growing daily. The danger is that it will destabilise the whole of West Africa which seems to be the intention. And No, the President has been at the forefront of demanding reparation for slavery from the colonial powers which are seen in Africa in the very poor light. Yet he doesn’t hesitate to ask those colonial powers for help.
I have always felt that Africa must solve its own problems, and stop running to the West for help when it can’t manage. Africa will never go up when it keeps behaving in this way. Problem in the Sahal is for the Sahel and surrounding nations to resolve.
