One of the female pupils did not turn up for three days. We finally managed to find out why.
She was embarrassed by her period and could not afford the sanitary products. The government has just put a huge tax on them and they are out of reach of many of the poor women. If this young woman continues in education for the next 10 years and continues the same pattern she will lose a whole year’s education to something which is natural and should not be a problem or embarrassment to any woman.
We have responded here by starting a health programme, distributing sanitary products free to the girls and the teachers. We can buy in bulk but we need help. Please have a look at our Just giving page. Click here.
