I had just finished the watch night service on our base in Ghana and it was just after midnight. I was chatting with people when I noticed that the young men had slipped secretly away. Suddenly BANG! They had found some fireworks and decided that we might need waking up. And it was not just us. Suddenly the whole valley was full of fireworks. So no early to bed that night!
In Ghana we take the watch night service very seriously across the nation. We want to say goodbye to the old year and thank God for the many blessings he is poured on us as a nation. We also want to remind him that we need the same blessings in the new year – possibly even more. We dance and we sing but not to ourselves. We rejoice in our great God and he’s watching over us. I much prefer the Ghana way.
As the year turns Mary and I are preparing to return to Ghana in February. She will lead Beloved church for a month and I am beginning preparations to establish our new church – Bethel. Somehow we will manage the disappointment of being away from a great chunk of the English winter. It’s a burden but someone has to do it!
My thanks to David Farey for managing these postings on Facebook-Connect. Much appreciated.
